Letter of Inquiry (LOI) - Instructions
The Letter of Inquiry (LOI) should be no longer than 4 pages: 2 pages of text (maximum), and 1 or 2 pages of financial documentation. One of these financial documentation pages should be a Statement of Activity (also called Statement of Revenue and Expense, Income Statement, or Profit and Loss Statement), and the other, if available, would be a Statement of Financial Position (also called a Balance Sheet). Please include an e-mail address for your organization so that we can acknowledge receipt of your LOI as quickly as possible.

Some hints on how to approach the Letter of Inquiry (LOI):
  • Avoid technical jargon and "foundation speak".
  • Be clear; be simple.
  • Avoid multiple lists.
"We will implement a visioning process that leverages existing and new relationships, creating a synergy of grassroots advocacy and civic engagement that will provide new opportunities for this underserved, but vital community," is the kind of sentence to avoid.

Feel free to dumb it down for us.

In the first paragraph of this LOI, please describe your project (or your organization, if your request is for general support) in as brief and compelling a manner as possible. Include the amount of your grant request in this paragraph.

In the remainder of the LOI, try to address all the listed items below. The format and content (following the 1st paragraph) is up to you. You may answer each bulleted point as a questionnaire - don't feel you have to compose a formal letter. We only ask that you address all the questions and stay within the 4-page limit.

What problem(s) does your organization or project address?

What makes your organization the right one to conduct this project?

What other organizations (corporate, governmental, and/or community-based) will you work with, if any? How?

What organizations have you worked with in the past?

What are the project or organizational goals for which you are requesting funding? How will you evaluate goal success or failure?

Will the organization/project go forward without assistance from Firedoll?

If you have requested funds from other sources (or plan to), please list those sources and note the status of your request.

What Foundations, if any, support your organization now?

What is your organization's financial position? This question will be answered in your included Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet) and Statement of Financial Activity (Income Statement).

Grant Amounts
Typical grant amounts range from $5,000 to $25,000, with a total of $650,000 to $1,000,000 distributed during the fiscal year. If you're new to Firedoll , please do not request or expect to receive the maximum grant amount; tailor your request in the middle to low end of our grant range, depending on your need.
